As we have indicated in past years, setting the tax rate is not a function of the school district. The rate is set by the County and takes into consideration factors over which the school district has no control such as the shift in tax burden from businesses to homeowners and the changes in assessed value of properties. Any change in Freeport property tax rate beyond 3.09% is not attributable to the school district. This has been the subject of a recent Newsday article which can be found at the below link:
