Snowflakes for Sandy Hook

Archer Street students participated in the nationwide effort to help the children from Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. transition into their new school building through the creation of a blizzard of paper snowflakes. Archer Street social worker Elizabeth Biscotti coordinated the effort, and Project Challenge teacher Deborah LaCorte assisted the children with making their designs. In describing the impetus for this project to the students, the explanation of the circumstances surrounding the Sandy Hook student relocation was delicately handled and appropriately presented. Students were encouraged to be as creative as possible to reinforce the notion that no two snowflakes are alike. The finished snowflakes were sent to the Connecticut Parent Teacher Student Association in a timely fashion to ensure that they would be there for the resumption of the Sandy Hook school year in a nearby renovated middle school.
