Earlier this week, members of the community became aware that High
School Principal Ernie Kight intended to retire from the District in
January.
But, after an outpouring of support from students, parents and community
members, Principal Kight has reconsidered his mid-year retirement and
has asked the Board of Education to rescind its resolution and allow him
to stay on in his position through the end of the school year in June
2012.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham has indicated that he
enthusiastically supports Mr. Kight’s request, and that he anticipates
the Board will unanimously agree with his recommendation. Mr. Kight is
expected to remain as Principal through June, 2012, when his retirement
will formally be accepted by the Board of Education.“I am overwhelmed by the support I have received in the days since
Tuesday night’s meeting from the Freeport community, and I am humbled by
the reaction from a broad spectrum of Freeport residents,” said Mr.
Kight. “But I want everyone to know that it was my decision to retire,
as it is my decision to remain through the end of this year, and I
appreciate the willingness of Dr. Kuncham and the Board to move forward
in this manner. Let us now put this matter behind us and get back to
being the District we are so proud to be a part of.” “The reaction of our community to this issue is testament to the pride
our residents feel in our schools, and in particular to leaders like Mr.
Kight,” said Dr. Kuncham. “The concerns that have been made public over
this matter have been deeply felt, and I am happy that Mr. Kight will
be staying on through the current school year.”
The Board will formally act on this issue in short order. As a result,
no changes are expected at the High School or at Atkinson Intermediate
School through the balance of the school year.
“Mr. Kight has been a tremendous asset to Freeport, and the Board is
delighted that he has decided to remain through the end of the year,”
said Board of Education President Debra McQuillan. “It will be a
pleasure to see him at graduation in June with our Seniors!”
