On the evening of Oct. 1, students from all eight public schools in the district combined their outstanding talents to present the fifth annual Peace Concert and Art Exhibit at Freeport High School
The musical performances all centered on the theme of peace and harmony. “I always look forward to this great celebration where our students, teachers and administrators come together to celebrate peace; they promote it not only here in Freeport, but around the world,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham in his opening remarks.
School Board President Debra Mulé and local officials, including Hempstead Town Councilwomen Angie Cullin and Dorothy Goosby, State Legislator David Denenberg and Freeport Deputy Mayor Carmen J. Piñeyro, took their turns at the podium to applaud the students’ efforts and offer their words of support for peace and unity. Board of Education Vice President Vilma Lancaster and trustees Ronald Ellerbe, Michael Pomerico and Anthony J. Miller were all present in support of the program.
Before the concert began, visitors had the opportunity to admire student artwork in the school lobby. The exhibit showcased the creative talents being nurtured in the school buildings at all levels.
Highlights of the program were performances of Frank Ticheli’s “Earth Song” by a student ensemble, conducted by 10th-grader Christopher Fludd; and Sy Miller and Jill Jackson’s “Let There Be Peace on Earth” performed by the high school Sinfonietta, conducted by Jill Boardman. The audience was given song sheets and invited to sing along.
Five years ago, Dr. Kuncham introduced the idea of presenting a districtwide concert dedicated to peace in conjunction with International Non-Violence Day and Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, both of which are celebrated on Oct. 2.
