Students at the Caroline G. Atkinson Intermediate School rolled back the calendar to a bygone era during their annual celebration of Pioneer Day. To experience life as a pioneer firsthand, the students rotated through a bevy of activities that were common in simpler times but little known today.“Coming on the cusp of the holidays and a new year, this is a great way for students to understand how we as a society have changed over time. Participating in colonial activities is both challenging and educational,” said Atkinson Vice Principal Michael Fee. Churning milk into butter, building scale model covered wagons, dancing the two-step, and playing games such as horseshoe toss, rim rolling and three-legged racing were just a few of the activities meant to expose the students to the daily routines of children living in an earlier time, when electronic entertainment was not yet available.
