New Visions second-grade students were happily surprised by the presence of a petting zoo on the school lawn, thanks to a 21st Century grant secured through the Freeport Public Schools Magnet Program. With their notebooks and pencils in hand, the children quickly went to work asking questions, taking notes and learning more about the visiting animals.
The activity served as a kickoff to the EngageNY ELA module focused on E.B. White’s classic children’s novel “Charlotte’s Web.” Through the activity, students gained necessary background information on farm life and animal relationships based on observation, cooperative activities, inquiry and group discussion. The students also used their senses of sight, sound, touch and smell to create a chart noting the similarities and differences among the animals.
The animals’ caretakers answered questions and helped students safely feed and handle the visiting goats, pigs, chickens and ducks.
